TROY, N.Y. - The Tri-City ValleyCats is one of five finalists for "Best Theme Night" at the Minor League Baseball Promotional Seminar this week in New Orleans, Louisiana. The New York-Penn League organization will be recognized for its "Weatherman Bobblehead Promotion".

In March 2009, the ValleyCats unveiled its newest bobblehead promotion; an online poll in which the Capital Region residents could cast their vote for one of four local meteorologists to be immortalized as a ValleyCats bobblehead doll during the 2009 season. Each of the four candidates, representing a different television news station, lobbied for votes on the nightly news, as well as online at the station's websites. The four meteorologists each chose a charity of their choice to which the ValleyCats would donate $500 if voted the winner.

The Capital Region responded with nearly 12,000 votes during the three week contest, cementing the promotion as one of the best in ValleyCats history. The winning meteorologist, Steve Caporizzo, chose the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society as his charity due to his dedication to pets and finding them a home. The bobblehead was designed with Caporizzo holding a dog in his arms. Caporizzo then reached out to many local humane societies, urging them to take part in a huge adoption clinic when the bobblehead was distributed on August 22. Caporizzo and his organization, The Pet Connection, also paid all of the adoption fees for all pets adopted during this evening.

"August 22 was a great night," said Caporizzo. "Everyone had fun and most importantly, we brought awareness to so many homeless animals in need and raised over $500 on their behalf"

ValleyCats Assistant General Manager Vic Christopher is attending the Promotional Seminar and will make a short presentation on the bobblehead promotion. "I am excited to represent the ValleyCats for this award in New Orleans," said Christopher. "I hope to have the award in hand when I return to Troy next week."

The other four finalists for the award are the Fort Wayne TinCaps and its "Women's Night Out", Lake Elsinore with "Fat Tuesday", Oklahoma City with "Taste of the Big Leagues" and the Trenton Thunder and Lakewood BlueClaws with "Kids Eat Free Every Game". The winner will be announced on Saturday, October 3.
