The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that St. Louis Cardinals Minor League pitcher Deryk Hooker has received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for a drug of abuse in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension of Hooker will be effective immediately.

Hooker split the 2008 season between Class A Short-Season Johnson City and Class A Quad Cities. He finished 1-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 15 games, 12 coming as starts.

The 6-foot-4 San Diego, Calif. native was selected by the Cardinals out of Mira Mesa High School in the seventh round of the June 2007 Draft.
