CINCINNATI -- The Padres found a willing trade partner for left-handed pitcher Randy Wolf on Tuesday, sending the veteran to the Astros for Minor League right-handed pitcher Chad Reineke. Reineke was in his second straight season with Triple-A Round Rock and had a 5-9 record with a 4.41 ERA in 20 outings with the Express. Wolf was 6-10 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 starts for the Padres this season. "Randy is an experienced starter and a great competitor," Astros general manager Ed Wade said in a statement. "We tried to sign him as a free agent during the offseason, but the chance for him to pitch close to home prevailed. I've known Randy since the day he signed his first professional contract, and I can say without hesitation that he brings every quality that you'd want in a member of your team, both on and off the field." Wolf can be a free agent after the season and will likely command -- and receive -- a multi-year deal from some team if he chooses the open market. Wolf was scheduled to pitch Thursday in Pittsburgh. By trading him now, San Diego will save up to $2.325 million in incentives for starts and innings pitched. Wolf signed a one-year deal with the Padres in December for $4.75 million. He recently purchased a house in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, a house once owned by former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Corey Brock is a reporter for MLB.com.
