DETROIT -- One day after sending left-handed hitter Jeff Clement back to Triple-A Tacoma, the Mariners on Monday promoted another lefty hitter, Jeremy Reed, from the Rainiers.

Reed joined the team in Detroit and will be available for Tuesday night's series opener against the Tigers.

The 26-year-old Reed, who spent the entire 2005 season with the Mariners, batting .254 in 141 games, was batting .349 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 21 RBIs in 38 games at Tacoma and had at least one hit in 26 of the 39 games he played.

In 239 career Major League games, Reed has a .253 average, with nine home runs and 67 RBIs. He batted .176 (3-for-17) with one triple last season with Seattle.

Also on Monday, the Mariners claimed right-handed pitcher Tracy Thorpe off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Thorpe, 27, was claimed after being designated for assignment by Toronto on May 10. The right-hander was 2-0 with four saves in 13 relief appearances for Triple-A Syracuse in the International League. He struck out 18, walked nine and limited opponents to a .213 (11-for-51) batting average.

Originally selected by Toronto in the 11th round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Thorpe spent his entire career in the Toronto organization. In nine Minor League seasons, Thorpe has combined to go 27-36 with 35 saves and a 4.49 ERA.

With the addition of Thorpe, the Mariners have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
