Jaime Garcia accomplished what no other pitcher in the Midwest League has been able to this season: outpitch Nick Adenhart of the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
Adenhart's bid to become the Minors' first eight-game winner was spoiled by Garcia, who allowed five hits over a season-high eight innings as the Swing of the Quad Cities blanked Cedar Rapids, 1-0, on Thursday.
Garcia exacted a measure of revenge after being outdueled by Adenhart last Friday in a 4-1 loss to the Kernels.
The fourth inning was the only frame in which Cedar Rapids managed more than one base runner against Garcia. Jordan Renz and Dallas Morris singled with one out, but the 19-year-old southpaw got the next two batters to fly out to end the threat.
Garcia (3-3) struck out five without issuing a walk in the longest outing of his career and the longest by a Swing starter this season.
Adenhart (7-1) produced one of his best efforts in a season full of them, going the distance for the first time. He allowed one run on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in eight innings.
While Adenhart suffered his first loss, the 2004 14th-round draft pick has dominated in 10 starts. He has worked at least seven innings in each of his last five outings and hasn't allowed more than one earned run since April 28 against Lansing.
Quad Cities (19-25) got its run in the sixth against Adenhart, who lowered his ERA to 1.51. Catcher Bryan Anderson led off with a double and Adam Rodgers followed a pair of groundouts with an RBI single up the middle.
Anderson helped Garcia by throwing out would-be base stealers in the third and seventh.
Brian Stitt retired the side in order in the ninth for his third save and send the Kernels (20-27) to their fifth straight loss. He has converted all three of his save opportunities, striking out eight in 7 2/3 innings with a 2.35 ERA.
Renz and Morris collected two hits apiece for the Kernels. Eric Justic is a contributor to MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
