Giants' Tanner stands up to Oaks
08/12/2008 1:57 AM ET
It's been an up-and-down season for Clayton Tanner. He's on his way back up again after Monday's start.

Tanner allowed just one hit over 6 2/3 innings in his longest outing of the season as the San Jose Giants topped the Visalia Oaks, 4-1, at Municipal Stadium.

Tanner (8-7) retired the first nine batters before issuing a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. He retired the side in order in the fifth and took the mound in the sixth having faced the minimum. With two outs in the frame, Konrad Schmidt singled to left to break up the no-hit bid.

The left-hander struck out six and walked two, lowering his ERA to 3.92 in winning his third straight start. Juan Trinidad struck out the only batter he faced, and Joe Paterson gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout in two innings to notch his fifth save.

The Australian native went 12-8 with a 3.59 ERA in 27 games -- 23 starts -- for the Class A Augusta Green Jackets of the South Atlantic League a year ago. He threw eight shutout innings in a win against Asheville on June 17, struck out a career-high nine in a win against Kannapolis on July 15 and was named a South Atlantic League Midseason All-Star.

In his first three starts for the Giants this season, Tanner allowed only an unearned run over 17 innings, striking out 14 and walking two. He was named the California League's Pitcher of the Week on April 14.

Matt Downs hit a two-run double on a three-RBI night, Brad Boyer went 3-for-4 and fell a homer shy of the cycle and Jackson Williams chipped in two hits for San Jose (30-20), which won for the fifth time in six games.

Oaks starter Barry Enright (9-8) yielded three runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out four over seven innings.

Ed Easley's ninth-inning single plated the only run for Visalia (20-29).
