Thunder alum Suppan named NLCS MVP 10/20/2006 2:24 PM ETTrenton Thunder
TRENTON, N.J. -- Jeff Suppan, who starred for the Trenton Thunder during the 1995 season, was named the MVP of the National League Championship Series as his St. Louis Cardinals topped the NY Mets in Game 7 on Thursday night. Suppan gave up one run on five hits in the 15 innings he pitched over the course of two starts. He won Game 3 last Saturday night in St. Louis, tossing eight innings of three-hit ball. He started Thursday's game and gave up a first-inning run, but then held the Mets hitless until the ninth inning. Suppan led the 1995 Thunder in ERA at 2.36, helping them to a first place finish in the EL Southern Division. His 2.36 ERA stood as the Thunder franchise record until this season when it was broken by Phil Hughes (2.25). He had a record of 6-2 in 99 innings of work with Trenton and was promoted to Pawtucket (Triple-A) and later Boston, where he made his Major League debut, that same season. Suppan is one of three former Thunder stars advancing to the World Series with the Cardinals. IF David Eckstein was a standout for the Thunder in 1999 and was the first former Thunder player to win the World Series with the Anaheim Angels in 2002. RHP Josh Hancock was one of the Thunder's top pitchers in 2001 and 2002 and is making his first World Series appearance.
