Spikes top Cutters for ninth straight
07/04/2007 4:23 PM ET
Michael Ambrose was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th inning to lift State College to a 7-6 win over visiting Williamsport on Wednesday afternoon.

The Spikes' victory was their ninth in a row and snapped the Crosscutters' five-game winning streak. State College now has a one game lead over Williamsport in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division.

Matt German came on to pitch the 10th inning for Williamsport (10-6) and retired the first two batters he faced. The 6-foot-8 southpaw then allowed Erik Huber's infield single and walked Miles Durham and Marcus Davis before plunking Ambrose to end the ballgame. State College (11-5) had not enjoyed a lead at any other point in the contest.

Ambrose's unorthodox game-winning RBI capped an impressive game, as he also doubled and scored in the third inning and homered in the fourth. Austin McClune went 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI, while Matt Cavagnaro delivered a pair of RBI groundouts.

D'Arby Myers collected five singles in the Crosscutters' losing effort and is now 12-for-17 over four games against the Spikes this season. The 19-year-old scored in the first and third innings, and drove in a run in the sixth. Matthew Rizzotti doubled and drove in three runs, while Alan Robbins went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

The Spikes' bullpen hurled four scoreless innings in relief of starter Nicolas Suero, who allowed six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits over six frames. Adam Simon (1-0) tossed 2 1/3 innings and picked up the win.

German (0-1) took the loss, allowing a run on a hit, two walks and a hit batsman while recording two outs. Starter Tyson Brummett allowed three runs on seven hits over three innings, while Christopher Rhoads preceded German's meltdown by striking out four batters over three hitless frames. --Benjamin Hill/MLB.com
