Eighth Inning Rally Gives Mavs Fifth Straight 08/25/2009 1:27 AM ET
Carlos Peguero stayed hot with two homers, and Leury Bonilla had a huge go-ahead homer in the eighth that catapulted the Mavs past the Lancaster JetHawks 10-6 Monday night. The Mavs trailed 6-5 heading to the bottom of the eighth. They had a runner a third with one out the previous two innings, but could not break through to tie it. They would not only tie the game, but then add four runs on top of that in the eighth. With runners at second and third and one out, Travis Scott hit a sac fly off Pat Urckfitz (0-1) to tie it. The JetHawks then brought in Jack Tilghman to face Leury Bonilla. Bonilla promptly hit Tilghman's first pitch out of the park to put the Mavs ahead 7-6. After Juan Diaz reached on an error, Tyson Gillies hit an RBI triple. Edilio Colina then knocked an RBI single to cap the rally. The JetHawks made interesting in the top of the ninth. They loaded the bases and brought they tying run to the plate with two outs. Steve Richard got Ebert Rosario to ground out to end the game. The Mavs, like they have during the entire homestand, took a quick lead in the first. Carlos Peguero hit a two-run homer to put the Mavs up 2-0. The JetHawks tied it with two sac flies in the second and took the lead courtesy of an RBI single by Koby Clemens in the third. Marcos Cabral hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth, but Peguero answered with a solo homer of his own to make it 4-3. Rosario rudely greeted Stephen Penney in the top of the fifth when he hit a two-run homer to make it 6-4. However, Penney (2-2) would then retire the next 12 men he faced, going four strong innings of relief and ended up with the win. The Mavs cut the lead to one in the sixth. Peguero hit an RBI triple, setting a new team record with his 14th triple of the year. Alex Liddi followed with an RBI single to make it 6-5. On the day he was named California League Player of the Week, Peugero kept it going with a 4-for-4 day, only needing a single for the cycle. He drove in four and scored four times as well. The Mavs will look to make it six straight when they face the JetHawks Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
